MUCH MORE THAN SEA AND SAND

The diverse landscape and attractive tourism offered by San Felipe make it a unique place in the state of Baja California. One example is the phenomenon of the extreme tides, taking an average of twelve hours; the sea actually withdraws from the beach—for nearly a mile in some areas. Another is the effect of the ocean contrasted against the forest of Mount San Pedro Mártir, where the landscape of trees and streams offers a captivating vista for lovers of nature

The fishing village of Puertecitos lies on a beautiful bay only 44 miles south of San Felipe. The tranquil waters of the Sea of Cortes lie quietly in the bay, and the only hot springs in the area can be found here. These have motivated many visitors to return to the port and to continue searching for other areas of interest.

Uniquely attractive is the Valley of the Giants where you can admire impressive cacti that reach heights of up to 50 feet; the Valley is only 9.3 miles from the heart of the port. The imposing Valle Chico (small valley) has a majestic landscape with the Laguna del Diablo (Devil’s Lake) and offers surprise-filled travel, and activities ranging from the most tranquil to the most extremely adventuresome.

ONLY IN THE PORT OF SAN FELIPE

The attractions of San Felipe are numerous. For example, it is considered to be the only place where the Vaquita Marina (“Sea Cow”, or dugong) can now be seen. This species is protected by the Mexican Federal Government by virtue of its danger of extinction. Like the porpoise, it is a mammal, and inhabits the Northern Gulf of California; this species is unique to the Sea of Cortés.

Another famous water species which can be found here is the Totoaba, which had a great marketing boom in the 1930's when the Asian market demanded it in large quantities. The capture of this fish was restricted in 1975, but the fishing industry it promoted led to the establishment of many fishing villages the State of Sonora and on the coasts of the Peninsula of Baja California. Thanks to favorable conditions today, the port is well developed and has great tourism potential.

In San Felipe there are many events to enjoy, such as various culinary exhibitions, from delicious paellas to the most exotic menus of fish and shellfish. You will find friendly and competent chefs specializing in cooking with various seasonings in an impressive variety of exquisite dishes.

The old tradition of the Carnival takes place year after year. Visitors can see an event that kicks off the festival with a demonstration of dark humor. Next comes the crowning of the queen and a parade with decorated floats, and dancers. San Felipe is also the headquarters for important Latin-American concerts, the Mexican Independence Festival, an elegant Shrimp Festival, and cultural events showcasing the region’s best artists and performers.

RACES AND OTHERS ACTIVITIES

The long off-road vehicle paths outside the desert provide adventures for the lover of speed and pure adrenalin. Year after year, increased interest in this area has expanded the number of competitors and of fans. For those of other temperaments, an option is to contemplate the beautiful sunrises and majestic sunsets of the Port, inspiring for those seeking photographic prizes. These are some of the many attractions that will interest thousands of enthusiastic tourists looking for the wonders of nature or for adventure. Added to all this, visitors can enjoy the tranquility of the waters, and will find San Felipe an ideal place for sailboating and kayaking.
